For creators

What a cracked screen overlay is for.

01

TikTok, Reels and Shorts

Hit the screen, cut to the crack. A 4-second vertical green screen clip with sound drops straight onto your timeline.

02

Thumbnails and posters

Lay a transparent cracked glass PNG over a thumbnail, game cover or poster for an instant broken-screen look.

03

Film and game effects

Use 4K or 8K transparent PNGs as a broken monitor, phone or window in a scene, a menu or a cutscene.

04

Slides and lessons

Show a cracked screen in a presentation about device care, insurance or screen protectors without a stock-photo licence.

How it works

Add a cracked screen effect in 4 steps.

  1. Pick and tune a crack. Choose a style, press New crack until you like it, and tap the preview to add impacts where your action happens.
  2. Export it. Press Download overlay. For a still, choose Image → Transparent → PNG at 4K. For motion, choose Video with sound → Green screen.
  3. Place it above your footage. Put the PNG on the track above your clip, or key out the green with Chroma Key, Ultra Key or a 3D keyer.
  4. Sync the hit. In the video the glass breaks 0.8 seconds in, with the sound, so line that frame up with the impact in your shot.

Editor guide

Using a cracked screen overlay in your editor.

Transparent PNG, green screen, or black?

  • Transparent PNG or WebP — the cleanest option for stills and most editors. Only the cracks are visible; nothing needs keying.
  • Green screen video — for motion. The glass cracks and spreads over about half a second with sound, and you key out the green (#00B140, a standard chroma green).
  • Black — for editors without transparency or keying. Use the Screen, Add or Lighten blend mode to drop the black.

CapCut (mobile and desktop)

  1. Import your footage and the overlay into the project.
  2. Add the overlay with Overlay › Add overlay and stretch it to fill the frame.
  3. For the green screen video, tap Remove BG › Chroma key, select the green with the colour picker, and raise Intensity and Shadow until the edges are clean.
  4. Line up the crack — 0.8 seconds into the clip — with the moment of impact in your footage.

Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects

In Premiere, place the overlay on V2 above your clip. A transparent PNG needs nothing else. For the green screen video, apply Effects › Keying › Ultra Key, pick the green with the eyedropper and set the output to Composite. In After Effects, use Keylight (1.2) with the green as the Screen Colour, or set a black-background version to the Screen blend mode.

DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro

In Resolve, put the overlay on track V2 and either set Composite Mode to Screen (for black) or open the Color page and use the 3D Qualifier to key the green; transparent PNGs work as they are. In Final Cut Pro, drag the Keyer effect onto the green clip, or place a transparent PNG above your footage.

Which resolution should I export?

Match your project: HD (1920 × 1080) for most social video, 2K (2560 × 1440) for a little room to zoom, 4K (3840 × 2160) for 4K timelines and thumbnails, and 8K (7680 × 4320) when you want to crop or punch in heavily. Use Portrait for vertical video. Because each export is drawn fresh at that size, an 8K crack is genuinely sharper than a 4K one — not an upscale.

Tips for a believable effect

  • Place the impact point where something actually hits the screen in your shot — tap the preview to put it there.
  • Add a quick 2–3 frame camera shake and a white flash on the impact frame.
  • Keep the glass slightly brighter than the footage underneath; real cracks catch the light.
  • Use LCD bleed or Destroyed when the “screen” should die afterwards, and Spider web or Corner drop when it keeps working.

Cracked screen overlay FAQ

How do I get a cracked screen overlay with a transparent background?

Pick a crack, press Download overlay, stay on the Image tab, choose Transparent as the background and PNG or WebP as the format, then pick HD, 2K, 4K or 8K. The PNG has a real alpha channel, so only the cracks are visible when you place it over a video or image.

How do I add a cracked screen effect in CapCut?

For the green screen video: add it as an overlay above your clip, tap Remove BG and choose Chroma key, then pick the green colour and raise Intensity until the green disappears. For a transparent PNG: add it as an overlay and resize it to fill the frame.

Does the green screen video include sound?

Yes, unless you untick Include the shatter sound. The glass-breaking sound is recorded together with the animation so the crack and the sound are already in sync.

What format is the video?

MP4 (H.264) in browsers that can record it, such as current Chrome, Edge and Safari, otherwise WebM. Both import into CapCut, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro and most phone editors; convert WebM with a free tool if your editor refuses it.

Can I use these cracked screen overlays commercially?

Yes. Images and videos you export here are generated on your device and are free for personal and commercial projects, including monetised videos. No attribution is required, though a link back is always appreciated. You may not resell the files as a standalone overlay pack.

Should I use a black or transparent background?

Transparent is the most flexible. If your editor struggles with transparency, export on black and set the overlay blend mode to Screen or Lighten, which hides the black and keeps the bright cracks.
